The Arctic Hideaway
Simplicity at its finest...a meeting place between audience, nature and arts. When looking at this project I immediately felt the peace and quiet without even visiting this place.
The Arctic Hideaway is located in the arctic coastal environment in the North of Norway on the island Fleinvær. The retreat was initiated by musician & composer Håvard Lund, designed by TYIN architects and Sami Rintala ( Ri-Eg architects) and built by Andrew Devine & Ruben Stranger as leaders of numerous of the best arc-and designstudents from all over.
‘initially it was meant as a workplace for myself, a writing lodge of sorts, as time went on, I felt an urge, a need, to share what I had found on fleinvær with others. I wanted to create a workspace unlike anything else in the world.’ - Håvard Lund
The project comprises a series of volumes, which step down the hill towards the sea. Visitors arriving by boat are greeted with a sauna that hovers above the water. A former waiting room in the old docks has been refurbished to accommodate overnight guests, while four small sleeping units are found further up the hillside.
There are no shops or cars at this place so before arrival a host will contact you to enquire about your needs. Food is ordered from the neighbor island, as there are no shops on the island. If you want a total time out, meals can be cooked together with coffee, tea, fruits & snacks.
Can you imagine staying in this amazing retreat...clearing your mind and even putting your phone in flight mode to just enjoy the surroundings and the people you are with? Or as they say it... If you really have to use your mobile, then see that you have these apps downloaded:
SKY GUIDE- shows star constellations, MARINE TRAFFIC- you hear boats, but where are they?, FLIGHTRADAR 24- make flight-quiz, where is the flight that leaves the coast at Fleinvær really going?
Your stay will be a memorable experience and you can come on your own or in a group up to ten persons.
Come to work, come to relax, or even come to discover. When nature is hugging you one second,
and shouting at you the next, your mind set gets massaged.
