The Ocean Chair - Zuiver
Every year, 300 million tonnes of plastic waste are produced worldwide. It is a well-known fact that much of this plastic waste ends up in our beloved oceans - 8 million tonnes a year to be precise. We believe we have a responsibility to our oceans to do better, for a better and sustainable future. That's why we started a collaboration with studio APE to design a chair made of 100% ocean plastic.
After careful research, we decided to use ocean bound plastic (OBP). This is abandoned plastic waste that is on its way to our oceans. It is collected from beaches, riverbanks, etc. up to 50 km from our oceans. OBP is not broken down or degraded like ocean plastic, which sometimes floats in the sea for decades. Therefore, this plastic waste passes the strict quality and safety tests.
We at Zuiver consider it important to do our bit for a better and more sustainable world. This is why we have a sustainability mission, in which we strive to significantly reduce the use of non-renewable resources and materials in our collection by 2030. - Zuiver
Two years ago, dutch design brand Zuiver started a project together with APE industrial design studio to design a chair made of 100% recycled ocean plastic and last Friday - on Earth Day - they launched the Ocean Chair and we love its design but most of all the sustainable idea behind this chair.
At the website of Zuiver we read that It wasn’t a process without obstacles, which makes them extra proud of the final result. The Ocean Chair - available in 4 different uni-colours: pirate black, ocean blue, rice and coconut milk - is part of their 'Spot on Responsibility' sustainability mission, where they want to significantly reduce the use of non-renewable materials and raw materials within their Zuiver brand by 2030, replacing them entirely with recycled and renewable materials.
